Hello Chess Families!
We have heard from our players and families that they are looking for chess education opportunities where players can improve their skills. In response, we are launching a new program called Chess Nights with a group lesson from a chess expert and opportunity to practice Over the Board with other strong players.
We are delighted that Juan Ramirez-Orta, an experienced chess player with a rating of 2059 and over 20-year chess playing experience has agreed to be our coach for this program. Juan has many accolades to his name both for his play as well as leadership role in growing chess. He recently placed second in our very own Mayflower Open, an international tournament held in Halifax in August 2022. Juan is also the founder of the Halifax Chess Club and is currently pursuing his PhD in Computer Science at Dalhousie University.
Chess Nights program is open to all ages but geared towards intermediate players who are looking to improve their game. Basic knowledge of chess is required. The sessions will start with a chess lesson followed by over-the-board games, the first and third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 pm, starting February 7, 2023 and will continue till the end of June.
