About Us

The Nova Scotia Scholastic Chess Association (NSSCA) is a volunteer run non-profit organization dedicated to promoting youth chess in Nova Scotia. Established in 1998, it is incorporated with the Provincial Registry of Joint Stocks under the Societies Act. The main goals of the NSSCA are to:

  • Organize regular chess tournaments for school aged children including Provincial Chess Challenge and School Team Provincial tournament;
  • Prepare a team for the Canadian Chess Challenge;
  • Promote chess education by working with schools, recreation centers and libraries;
  • Organize an annual chess festival in Halifax

NSSCA works in partnership with other local and national organizations to achieve its goals. These partners include but are not limited to: Chess and Math Association, Chess Nova Scotia, public schools, universities, libraries and recreation centers.

Open Board Positions:

Awards and Trophies Director
Role Responsibilities:
-Manage inventory of awards (trophies, medals, plaques and new player certificates)
-Selection and ordering of awards
-Mentorship provided by the NSSCA president
Tournament Organizer
Role Responsibilities:
-Develop a calendar of events for the year
-Manage and schedule room bookings for tournaments and events
-Mentorship provided by the NSSCA president
Website Manager
Role Responsibilities:
-Manage the NSSCA website, posting updates and events
-Ensuring material consistent across the NSSCA social media platforms
-Website design and organization
-Mentorship provided by the NSSCA president
Grants and Fundraiser Organizer
Role Responsibilities:
-Seek out grant opportunities and write grants in coordination with the vice-president
-Seek out and create fundraiser and sponsorship opportunities
-Mentorship provided by the NSSCA vice-president
Assistant Tournament Director
Role Responsibilities:
-Assist the tournament director in running tournaments (assigning participants to groups, using the chess software to make pairings)
