Introduction to the Chess Tournaments

Regular Tournaments
Our regular monthly tournaments are open to all students from grades primary to twelve. Participants are divided into groups of similar age and skill. They usually play 5 games and the top 3 players in each group win a medal. All players receive a Chess'n Math national chess rating. Ratings can be found on the Chess'n Math Website.

Canadian Chess Challenge
The Canadian Chess Challenge is a tournament leading to the National Scholastic Chess Championship. The event is organized by the Chess n' Math Association. Students compete against other players in the same school grade. The Provincial Chess Challenge is on the first Sunday of March in Halifax. The twelve winners at the provincial tournament advance to the National Finals on Victoria Day weekend. The location of the Nationals changes every year ( Quebec City in 2007, Edmonton in 2008, Toronto in 2009, Montreal 2010). The NSSCA raises funds to help with our team's travel expenses.

CFC Youth Championship
The Canadian Youth Chess Championship is a national competition organized by the Chess Federation of Canada, with players divided by age (under 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 determined by age as of the 1st of January every year). The Nova Scotia Youth Championship is an open tournament. Winners for each age group qualify for the CFC National Finals held each year in July.

School Team Tournament
The team tournament on the first Sunday of April is open to all schools. Teams consist of 4 players and the competition is split into 4 sections by grade (1-4, 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12). Trophies are awarded for the top team in each section.
